Chamber Notes 2-21-17

This is the time of year that as a chamber we focus on planning for the coming year’s activities.  For these activities to be successful it will take lots of volunteers.  Leading the charge on these activities is always the chairmen of the various committees.

This week I would like to highlight the co-chairs of our Smokin’ the Fort BBQ & Bluegrass Festival. Brad Clinkenbeard and Alissa Gage are the two people who have guided this committee for years.  These two people have been the backbone of this event since its inception.

This event is the largest non-dues revenue event that the chamber sponsors.  Alissa and Brad were not able to attend our recent chamber banquet so it is only fitting that our first column featuring chairmen be written about the two of them.

These two work together like a well oiled machine.  Each knows exactly what their role is and how to get it accomplished with the help of their many volunteers.  Brad takes care of getting everything set up in town with all vendors placed in just the right place.  He knows what the cooks need as far as electricity and where each vendor should be set up.  Brad stays up all night to make sure everything is just right, whether it is delivering ice to the cooks or providing grease buckets, Brad not only gets it done but gets it done right.

Alissa takes the role of handling all the entries in the KCBS BBQ competition and also making sure the judges have everything they need.  She is an officer in the Oklahoma BBQ Society which is a part of the Kansas City BBQ society.  The KCBS is the organization which sanctions our contests.  Alissa will make sure that all entries have everything that they need so that we can have a successful competition and enjoyable family event.

As I said, Brad and Alissa were not able to attend the chamber banquet where the year’s awards were passed out, but they were selected to receive a Community Engagement Award which is very much deserved.

Remember that each Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. your chamber meets for a dutch treat coffee at the Wise Owl Coffee Roasters.  Also for the month of February we will meet each Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Charlie’s Chicken for a dutch treat lunch.  Hope to see you there.
